118. The “Root Cause” Myth of Your Sex Addiction

The concept of the “root cause” is a bit oversimplified. Sex addiction is a complex problem that originates from many aspects of your life.

In this episode, I help men grasp the size of compulsive sexual behavior and how complex recovery really is.

Complex does not mean difficult… But it does mean that you will need to take this seriously if you want to achieve lasting recovery.

For the married men listening to this, trust is off the table after you betray your wife sexually. You will need to prove to her that you know how to prevent this from happening again.

At the end of the episode, I give men some ways that they can help uncover the complexities of their process addiction so that they can create an effective recovery plan.

If you have not yet read my book, I spend most of it helping men uncover the “why” behind their sexual acting out. You can find it here on Amazon and on Audible: https://a.co/d/0j6eRiQR

1
00:00:01.280 –> 00:00:03.199
– I like calling it a process addiction because

2
00:00:03.199 –> 00:00:05.440
– it’s that big. Okay? That’s reason number one

3
00:00:05.440 –> 00:00:06.879
– why I’m sharing this with you is you

4
00:00:06.879 –> 00:00:08.800
– gotta appreciate the size of this thing or

5
00:00:08.800 –> 00:00:10.900
– you’re gonna relapse. Right? That’s why we see

6
00:00:10.960 –> 00:00:13.564
– almost seventy percent of men having a significant

7
00:00:13.865 –> 00:00:16.125
– relapse within five years is because

8
00:00:16.585 –> 00:00:18.664
– I don’t think they were in recovery. I

9
00:00:18.664 –> 00:00:20.744
– think they were just in sobriety. Right? They

10
00:00:20.744 –> 00:00:22.664
– found a way to stop doing these things.

11
00:00:22.664 –> 00:00:24.024
– And then they’re like, hey. See. Look at

12
00:00:24.024 –> 00:00:25.704
– me. I’ve been a year or two years

13
00:00:25.704 –> 00:00:27.399
– or three years. I haven’t done it before.

14
00:00:27.399 –> 00:00:30.059
– But again, if you don’t change the beliefs

15
00:00:30.199 –> 00:00:32.600
– and the brain processes that drove the behavior

16
00:00:32.600 –> 00:00:34.359
– in the first place, you are not in

17
00:00:34.359 –> 00:00:36.359
– recovery and I believe you are at risk

18
00:00:36.359 –> 00:00:37.100
– of relapse.

19
00:00:38.840 –> 00:00:40.920
– You are listening to the sex addiction podcast

20
00:00:40.920 –> 00:00:44.234
– for high achievers, business professionals, executives, and entrepreneurs.

21
00:00:44.615 –> 00:00:47.175
– This podcast is designed to apply sobriety and

22
00:00:47.175 –> 00:00:48.155
– recovery principles

23
00:00:48.535 –> 00:00:51.115
– specifically to the mindset of the high achiever.

24
00:00:51.495 –> 00:00:53.815
– I’m your host, Roland Cochran, founder of The

25
00:00:53.815 –> 00:00:56.295
– Successful Addict, a recovery group for high achieving

26
00:00:56.295 –> 00:00:58.810
– men struggling with sex and porn addiction. For

29
00:01:04.170 –> 00:01:06.270
– And now, enjoy the rest of the episode.

30
00:01:07.770 –> 00:01:10.010
– The root cause of your behavior. Right? You’ll

31
00:01:10.010 –> 00:01:12.075
– hear people talk about this a lot being

32
00:01:12.075 –> 00:01:14.155
– the key to recovery. And I agree, but

33
00:01:14.155 –> 00:01:14.734
– I disagree.

34
00:01:15.194 –> 00:01:17.114
– I agree, and I have other episodes on

35
00:01:17.114 –> 00:01:19.034
– this around how I agree. But I think

36
00:01:19.034 –> 00:01:20.875
– the concept of the root cause is a

37
00:01:20.875 –> 00:01:21.855
– little oversimplified.

38
00:01:22.795 –> 00:01:24.795
– It makes it sound like there is a

39
00:01:24.795 –> 00:01:25.295
– single

40
00:01:25.709 –> 00:01:27.950
– reason why you did the things that you

41
00:01:27.950 –> 00:01:30.750
– did. And that’s a bit dangerous because what

42
00:01:30.750 –> 00:01:33.090
– you’ll find is the root cause is actually

43
00:01:33.150 –> 00:01:34.049
– far bigger

44
00:01:34.670 –> 00:01:37.650
– than we realize. I’ll use me for example.

45
00:01:38.025 –> 00:01:40.344
– Right? I have a root cause. Anybody who’s

46
00:01:40.344 –> 00:01:42.025
– read my book has heard me talk about

47
00:01:42.025 –> 00:01:43.225
– it in the book. You’ve heard me talk

48
00:01:43.225 –> 00:01:44.745
– about the podcast. Right? In the end, I

49
00:01:44.745 –> 00:01:47.465
– can summarize mine to really one sentence. Right?

50
00:01:47.465 –> 00:01:49.465
– I grew up and wondered if I mattered.

51
00:01:49.465 –> 00:01:50.825
– Right? Because a lot of the people in

52
00:01:50.825 –> 00:01:52.950
– my childhood didn’t really make me feel like

53
00:01:52.950 –> 00:01:55.349
– I was significant. And so, I spent the

54
00:01:55.349 –> 00:01:56.890
– rest of my freaking life

55
00:01:57.269 –> 00:01:59.930
– proving my significance. And my process addiction was

56
00:02:00.390 –> 00:02:01.829
– the root cause, if you want to call

57
00:02:01.829 –> 00:02:02.810
– it that, was

58
00:02:03.189 –> 00:02:04.810
– I measured my

59
00:02:05.204 –> 00:02:06.424
– success or my mattering

60
00:02:06.724 –> 00:02:09.044
– by how many men were envious of me

61
00:02:09.044 –> 00:02:11.364
– and wanted to be me, wanted the life

62
00:02:11.364 –> 00:02:12.805
– that I had, wanted to have the things

63
00:02:12.805 –> 00:02:14.164
– that I have, the creative things that I

64
00:02:14.164 –> 00:02:16.245
– created. And then how many women wanted to

65
00:02:16.245 –> 00:02:18.049
– sleep with me? How many women were attracted

66
00:02:18.049 –> 00:02:19.729
– to me? How many women wanted me to

67
00:02:19.729 –> 00:02:21.969
– give their attention? How many women wanted me

68
00:02:21.969 –> 00:02:24.689
– to give me their attention? Right? That was

69
00:02:24.689 –> 00:02:26.289
– really how I measured it. Right? How many

70
00:02:26.289 –> 00:02:28.289
– men want to be me? How many women

71
00:02:28.289 –> 00:02:29.729
– want to be with me? Right? Here’s the

72
00:02:29.729 –> 00:02:32.789
– challenge with simplifying like that. It’s actually so

73
00:02:32.930 –> 00:02:33.430
– much

74
00:02:34.125 –> 00:02:35.885
– bigger. And again, like, yes, that’s the root

75
00:02:35.885 –> 00:02:38.125
– cause. But I’ll give you some examples. Right?

76
00:02:38.125 –> 00:02:40.365
– So let’s just continue with me, for example,

77
00:02:40.365 –> 00:02:41.485
– just because it’s easy for me to talk

78
00:02:41.485 –> 00:02:43.105
– about. There’s inadequacies.

79
00:02:43.645 –> 00:02:46.125
– Right? So the reason I’m striving so much,

80
00:02:46.125 –> 00:02:47.564
– a lot of high achieving men don’t know

81
00:02:47.564 –> 00:02:50.699
– this, but achievement is almost always birthed out

82
00:02:50.699 –> 00:02:53.419
– of insecurity and inadequacy. Right? I’m not enough

83
00:02:53.419 –> 00:02:55.419
– the way I am today, and I will

84
00:02:55.419 –> 00:02:57.900
– be enough when I get more. Right? And

85
00:02:57.900 –> 00:03:00.219
– so there is this endless accumulation. I’m not

86
00:03:00.219 –> 00:03:02.060
– okay if I just stop today. Right? That’s

87
00:03:02.060 –> 00:03:04.275
– not okay. I need more. Right? So there’s

88
00:03:04.335 –> 00:03:06.735
– inadequacies and insecurities. Right? And there’s a ton

89
00:03:06.735 –> 00:03:08.495
– of stuff in terms of where those came

90
00:03:08.495 –> 00:03:11.694
– from. Right? There’s hierarchy, social hierarchies. Right? Like,

91
00:03:11.694 –> 00:03:13.694
– oh, I’m down here and so many men

92
00:03:13.694 –> 00:03:15.875
– are up here and better than me. There’s

93
00:03:16.090 –> 00:03:18.569
– insecurities around your appearance and, oh, I I

94
00:03:18.569 –> 00:03:20.810
– don’t look successful enough. I don’t have enough.

95
00:03:20.810 –> 00:03:22.729
– My resume is not thick enough. My financial

96
00:03:22.729 –> 00:03:24.569
– portfolio is not big enough. My house is

97
00:03:24.569 –> 00:03:26.889
– not nice enough. Right? And those are just

98
00:03:26.889 –> 00:03:29.209
– some examples. Right? And then we have a

99
00:03:29.209 –> 00:03:31.474
– whole another plethora about the beliefs you have

100
00:03:31.474 –> 00:03:33.155
– about people. Right? And what they think of

101
00:03:33.155 –> 00:03:35.235
– you. So, oh, people only respect people like

102
00:03:35.235 –> 00:03:38.275
– this. Or people judge people like that. Or

103
00:03:38.275 –> 00:03:41.715
– nobody cares about people until they cross this

104
00:03:41.715 –> 00:03:44.115
– threshold. Right? So it’s all these beliefs around

105
00:03:44.115 –> 00:03:46.620
– how we gain approval, how we matter in

106
00:03:46.620 –> 00:03:47.520
– society, etcetera.

107
00:03:47.900 –> 00:03:50.139
– These are just like a couple examples. There’s

108
00:03:50.139 –> 00:03:52.539
– hundreds. There’s hundreds upon hundreds. There’s a bunch

109
00:03:52.539 –> 00:03:53.360
– of like materialism

110
00:03:53.819 –> 00:03:55.580
– beliefs of things that I feel like I

111
00:03:55.580 –> 00:03:57.435
– need to acquire so that I can prove

112
00:03:57.435 –> 00:04:00.074
– to everybody that I matter. I mean, hundreds

113
00:04:00.074 –> 00:04:01.995
– upon hundreds truly. I mean, that’s how big.

114
00:04:01.995 –> 00:04:04.014
– So, yes, while you can summarize

115
00:04:04.715 –> 00:04:07.194
– the root cause into a sentence, it’s so

116
00:04:07.194 –> 00:04:09.754
– much bigger than people realize. And the reason

117
00:04:09.754 –> 00:04:11.914
– I’m recording this episode is, well, really two

118
00:04:11.914 –> 00:04:12.414
– reasons.

119
00:04:12.800 –> 00:04:15.539
– One, I don’t think you’re in recovery

120
00:04:16.319 –> 00:04:18.899
– unless you understand how big

121
00:04:19.519 –> 00:04:21.600
– this thing really is. I don’t like the

122
00:04:21.600 –> 00:04:23.360
– word root cause. I prefer you guys have

123
00:04:23.360 –> 00:04:24.800
– probably heard me say this, right? I prefer

124
00:04:24.800 –> 00:04:26.660
– calling this thing a process addiction.

125
00:04:27.095 –> 00:04:28.935
– And the reason I like using that word

126
00:04:28.935 –> 00:04:31.975
– is it indicates that the brain has these

127
00:04:31.975 –> 00:04:32.475
– processes

128
00:04:32.935 –> 00:04:36.055
– that it is relentlessly pursuing as compulsive around

129
00:04:36.055 –> 00:04:38.775
– or addicted to or, or sees value in.

130
00:04:38.775 –> 00:04:40.855
– And it’s your job in recovery to figure

131
00:04:40.855 –> 00:04:42.670
– out what those are. And it’s way more

132
00:04:42.670 –> 00:04:43.410
– than one.

133
00:04:43.710 –> 00:04:46.029
– It’s truly hundreds, if not thousands. Okay. There’s

134
00:04:46.029 –> 00:04:47.949
– a lot of things that we are thinking

135
00:04:47.949 –> 00:04:50.210
– about that drive our day to day behavior.

136
00:04:50.670 –> 00:04:52.990
– Some of those things are good things. Some

137
00:04:52.990 –> 00:04:54.750
– of those things are going to get you

138
00:04:54.750 –> 00:04:57.305
– into trouble with your marriage or even with

139
00:04:57.305 –> 00:04:59.944
– yourself. Right? Int integrity issues. Okay? I like

140
00:04:59.944 –> 00:05:02.105
– calling it a process addiction because it’s that

141
00:05:02.105 –> 00:05:04.024
– big. Okay? That’s reason number one why I’m

142
00:05:04.024 –> 00:05:05.944
– sharing this with you is you gotta appreciate

143
00:05:05.944 –> 00:05:07.384
– the size of this thing or you’re gonna

144
00:05:07.384 –> 00:05:09.879
– relapse. Right? That’s why we see almost seventy

145
00:05:09.879 –> 00:05:13.159
– percent of men having a significant relapse within

146
00:05:13.159 –> 00:05:14.220
– five years is

147
00:05:14.759 –> 00:05:16.839
– because I don’t think they were in recovery.

148
00:05:16.839 –> 00:05:18.919
– I think they were just in sobriety. Right?

149
00:05:18.919 –> 00:05:20.519
– They found a way to stop doing these

150
00:05:20.519 –> 00:05:22.185
– things. And then they’re like, hey, see, look

151
00:05:22.185 –> 00:05:23.784
– at me. I’ve been a year or two

152
00:05:23.784 –> 00:05:25.305
– years or three years. I haven’t done it

153
00:05:25.305 –> 00:05:27.944
– before. But again, if you don’t change the

154
00:05:27.944 –> 00:05:29.644
– beliefs and the brain processes

155
00:05:30.024 –> 00:05:31.884
– that drove the behavior in the first place,

156
00:05:31.944 –> 00:05:33.625
– you are not in recovery. And I believe

157
00:05:33.625 –> 00:05:35.879
– you are at risk of relapse. I always,

158
00:05:35.879 –> 00:05:37.399
– you know, in my book, I talk about,

159
00:05:37.399 –> 00:05:38.919
– it’s like the third chapter or something, I

160
00:05:38.919 –> 00:05:41.579
– talk about how recovery is on a spectrum.

161
00:05:41.639 –> 00:05:43.399
– And if you are down on the unhealthy

162
00:05:43.399 –> 00:05:45.079
– side of the spectrum, right, you just get

163
00:05:45.079 –> 00:05:45.579
– discovered,

164
00:05:45.879 –> 00:05:47.419
– right, you’re beginning recovery,

165
00:05:47.720 –> 00:05:50.074
– you’re way down on the unhealthy side, Right?

166
00:05:50.074 –> 00:05:52.555
– The unsober side. And relapse is is a

167
00:05:52.555 –> 00:05:54.555
– lot more likely down there. It’s not gonna

168
00:05:54.555 –> 00:05:55.995
– take that much for you to make a

169
00:05:55.995 –> 00:05:58.235
– bad decision. But as we start recovering, we

170
00:05:58.235 –> 00:06:00.955
– start marching up towards the healthier side of

171
00:06:00.955 –> 00:06:01.615
– the spectrum.

172
00:06:01.930 –> 00:06:03.209
– And the closer and closer you get over

173
00:06:03.209 –> 00:06:04.970
– there, the harder and harder it is for

174
00:06:04.970 –> 00:06:06.889
– you to act out. Right? There’s a lot

175
00:06:06.889 –> 00:06:09.209
– more inner turmoil, a lot more second guessing

176
00:06:09.209 –> 00:06:11.129
– yourself, a lot of a lot of talking

177
00:06:11.129 –> 00:06:13.689
– yourself out of things. It’s that healthy inner

178
00:06:13.689 –> 00:06:16.089
– talk that keeps you from making the bad

179
00:06:16.089 –> 00:06:18.345
– decisions. Right? But here’s the thing. If you’re

180
00:06:18.345 –> 00:06:20.264
– lower down on the spectrum, it’s more likely

181
00:06:20.264 –> 00:06:21.464
– it’s gonna happen. And I think a lot

182
00:06:21.464 –> 00:06:23.404
– of guys, because they’re so focused on sobriety

183
00:06:23.464 –> 00:06:25.545
– and not recovery, they’re on the unhealthy side

184
00:06:25.545 –> 00:06:27.064
– of the spectrum even though they’re not doing

185
00:06:27.064 –> 00:06:29.145
– the same behaviors. Right? So they’re actually not

186
00:06:29.145 –> 00:06:30.605
– that far away from relapse.

187
00:06:31.039 –> 00:06:33.759
– The second reason that I am recording this

188
00:06:33.759 –> 00:06:36.319
– episode is for the married men here. And

189
00:06:36.319 –> 00:06:38.720
– that’s because your wife is going to need

190
00:06:38.720 –> 00:06:40.800
– to know. I mean trust is gone. So

191
00:06:40.800 –> 00:06:42.160
– the only way that she is going to

192
00:06:42.160 –> 00:06:43.759
– be able to stay with you and have

193
00:06:43.759 –> 00:06:44.579
– any resemblance

194
00:06:44.879 –> 00:06:45.539
– of safety

195
00:06:45.944 –> 00:06:48.185
– while in this new kind of recovery marriage

196
00:06:48.185 –> 00:06:50.345
– with you is if she understands how the

197
00:06:50.345 –> 00:06:52.845
– heck this happened. And that’s not just this

198
00:06:52.904 –> 00:06:56.504
– simplified explanation of your root cause. Right? It’s

199
00:06:56.504 –> 00:06:58.125
– this greater understanding

200
00:06:58.850 –> 00:07:01.089
– of all of the things that went into

201
00:07:01.089 –> 00:07:03.089
– it. Where it came from. When this all

202
00:07:03.089 –> 00:07:05.509
– started. Why it started. Right? It’s the understanding

203
00:07:05.730 –> 00:07:08.310
– of the entire web of your process addiction

204
00:07:08.370 –> 00:07:10.370
– that actually allows you to dismantle it, change

205
00:07:10.370 –> 00:07:13.269
– it, and protect yourself and protect your marriage

206
00:07:13.464 –> 00:07:15.805
– from you doing any of this again. Now,

207
00:07:16.185 –> 00:07:18.345
– another word that I don’t necessarily love is

208
00:07:18.345 –> 00:07:20.264
– recovery. Because again, I think it’s too simple,

209
00:07:20.264 –> 00:07:23.805
– right? It’s the opposite of the unhealthy behaviors.

210
00:07:23.944 –> 00:07:26.185
– But again, similar to root cause, I also

211
00:07:26.185 –> 00:07:28.759
– think that that’s too simple. Because to me,

212
00:07:28.899 –> 00:07:30.680
– I like to call it self mastery

213
00:07:31.139 –> 00:07:33.379
– because what we know about humans is they’re

214
00:07:33.379 –> 00:07:33.879
– incredibly

215
00:07:34.259 –> 00:07:34.759
– complex

216
00:07:35.220 –> 00:07:37.300
– and it would take a lifetime, truly a

217
00:07:37.300 –> 00:07:40.199
– lifetime to understand all of your brain processes

218
00:07:40.339 –> 00:07:42.665
– and find all of the problematic ones. Most

219
00:07:42.665 –> 00:07:44.024
– of the time that’s be it’s, it’s not

220
00:07:44.024 –> 00:07:45.545
– your fault. It’s because we don’t know it’s

221
00:07:45.545 –> 00:07:47.225
– a problem until we know it’s a problem.

222
00:07:47.225 –> 00:07:48.904
– Right. That’s why sex addiction and all this

223
00:07:48.904 –> 00:07:49.884
– cheating and infidelity

224
00:07:50.345 –> 00:07:52.024
– guys are always baffled when they look at

225
00:07:52.024 –> 00:07:53.384
– it. Like, Oh my gosh. Like, I can’t

226
00:07:53.384 –> 00:07:55.660
– believe I got here. Well, it’s because of

227
00:07:55.660 –> 00:07:57.740
– what I just said, right? We don’t really

228
00:07:57.740 –> 00:08:00.540
– see the problems in this belief system until

229
00:08:00.540 –> 00:08:01.600
– it becomes a problem.

230
00:08:01.980 –> 00:08:03.419
– So, the reason I like to call it

231
00:08:03.419 –> 00:08:04.800
– self mastery is

232
00:08:05.100 –> 00:08:07.100
– it sets you up really to get into

233
00:08:07.100 –> 00:08:08.639
– a container where you’re continuously

234
00:08:09.935 –> 00:08:12.514
– understanding yourself. You’re continuously understanding

235
00:08:13.294 –> 00:08:15.535
– how your beliefs formed, where they came from.

236
00:08:15.535 –> 00:08:17.375
– Because here’s what’s going to happen. You’ll start

237
00:08:17.375 –> 00:08:19.794
– to identify some really significant

238
00:08:20.574 –> 00:08:23.294
– aspects of your childhood, your teenage years, and

239
00:08:23.294 –> 00:08:25.470
– even your early adult years. And you’ll start

240
00:08:25.470 –> 00:08:27.569
– identifying these really impactful events

241
00:08:28.110 –> 00:08:29.250
– that made you adapt.

242
00:08:29.550 –> 00:08:31.710
– Again, it could be somebody singling you out

243
00:08:31.710 –> 00:08:33.149
– and talking down to you. It could be

244
00:08:33.149 –> 00:08:36.190
– somebody overlooking you and choosing somebody else over

245
00:08:36.190 –> 00:08:37.965
– you. Right? It doesn’t have to be these

246
00:08:37.965 –> 00:08:39.805
– massive traumas. It could be this little life

247
00:08:39.805 –> 00:08:41.884
– event where you feel like, man, if I

248
00:08:41.884 –> 00:08:44.125
– just had this, this and this, I would

249
00:08:44.125 –> 00:08:45.965
– have been chosen that day. Right? If I

250
00:08:45.965 –> 00:08:47.805
– would have just had those three things, that

251
00:08:47.805 –> 00:08:49.404
– person wouldn’t have embarrassed me in front of

252
00:08:49.404 –> 00:08:51.339
– everybody. So then we spend, you know, it

253
00:08:51.339 –> 00:08:53.019
– sounds so bizarre, but then we spend the

254
00:08:53.019 –> 00:08:55.339
– rest of our life really unknowingly to us

255
00:08:55.339 –> 00:08:57.659
– trying to acquire these things so that these

256
00:08:57.659 –> 00:09:00.139
– adverse events don’t happen to us. Right? But

257
00:09:00.139 –> 00:09:01.120
– it’s that understanding

258
00:09:01.500 –> 00:09:03.019
– that helps you form what I like to

259
00:09:03.019 –> 00:09:05.955
– call self mastery. It’s this constant understanding that

260
00:09:06.115 –> 00:09:08.355
– I need to be careful because I have

261
00:09:08.355 –> 00:09:09.735
– really big gaps

262
00:09:10.195 –> 00:09:11.495
– in my mental processes

263
00:09:11.875 –> 00:09:13.875
– that if I execute on them perfectly, they

264
00:09:13.875 –> 00:09:15.715
– can lead to a ton of success. Success

265
00:09:15.715 –> 00:09:17.715
– in your career, success in your friendships and

266
00:09:17.715 –> 00:09:21.149
– relationships, success in your kind of philanthropic activities.

267
00:09:21.149 –> 00:09:23.389
– But if you execute on those in the

268
00:09:23.389 –> 00:09:26.189
– wrong way, it could end in, emotional affair,

269
00:09:26.189 –> 00:09:28.750
– a physical affair. Just one bad decision that

270
00:09:28.750 –> 00:09:31.629
– has the potential to, yes, ruin your marriage,

271
00:09:31.629 –> 00:09:33.389
– but also there’s a lot of guys in

272
00:09:33.389 –> 00:09:35.384
– my groups that have had pretty significant career

273
00:09:35.384 –> 00:09:37.705
– consequences. There’s some men who the relationship with

274
00:09:37.705 –> 00:09:39.705
– their children has been really significantly harmed by

275
00:09:39.705 –> 00:09:41.865
– what they’ve done to their kid’s mother. Right?

276
00:09:41.865 –> 00:09:44.264
– And so I like calling it self mastery

277
00:09:44.264 –> 00:09:46.205
– because it puts you on this introspective

278
00:09:46.585 –> 00:09:47.085
– trajectory

279
00:09:47.629 –> 00:09:50.269
– to essentially become the master of self. Right?

280
00:09:50.269 –> 00:09:52.990
– Because again, the goal is not perfection because

281
00:09:52.990 –> 00:09:54.589
– humans just aren’t perfect. It’s just it’s just

282
00:09:54.589 –> 00:09:56.190
– the nature of how we are. The goal

283
00:09:56.190 –> 00:09:58.429
– is understanding your imperfection so that they don’t

284
00:09:58.429 –> 00:10:01.184
– bother you. Right? They don’t ruin your life.

285
00:10:01.184 –> 00:10:02.544
– They don’t end up in making any of

286
00:10:02.544 –> 00:10:05.504
– these unwanted decisions. Right. So in, in many

287
00:10:05.504 –> 00:10:07.184
– ways you end up acting, you know, not

288
00:10:07.184 –> 00:10:10.464
– perfect, but closer to perfect while still being

289
00:10:10.464 –> 00:10:12.509
– imperfect the whole time. You just develop a

290
00:10:12.590 –> 00:10:14.509
– a self mastery lifestyle so that these things

291
00:10:14.509 –> 00:10:16.750
– aren’t disrupting the very things that you cherish

292
00:10:16.750 –> 00:10:18.910
– most. Now, I wanna end with giving you

293
00:10:18.910 –> 00:10:21.070
– guys a couple examples of what to do,

294
00:10:21.070 –> 00:10:22.610
– right? Because discovering

295
00:10:23.070 –> 00:10:24.290
– your process addiction

296
00:10:24.669 –> 00:10:26.610
– or root cause, whatever you wanna call it,

297
00:10:27.384 –> 00:10:29.464
– it’s really important, but it because of how

298
00:10:29.464 –> 00:10:31.304
– big it is, there’s a lot to be

299
00:10:31.304 –> 00:10:32.424
– done there. So I wanna give you guys

300
00:10:32.424 –> 00:10:34.825
– a couple kind of options. Number one, without

301
00:10:34.825 –> 00:10:36.284
– question, are intensives.

302
00:10:36.904 –> 00:10:39.065
– In person intensives. Okay? And there’s a couple

303
00:10:39.065 –> 00:10:41.384
– different ways to do this. I offer them

304
00:10:41.384 –> 00:10:43.000
– as a part of my groups, and there’s

305
00:10:43.000 –> 00:10:44.279
– other intensives out there. A lot of my

306
00:10:44.279 –> 00:10:46.360
– friends and colleagues have group intensives that they

307
00:10:46.360 –> 00:10:48.440
– offer, but it doesn’t have to be a

308
00:10:48.440 –> 00:10:49.740
– formal group intensive.

309
00:10:50.120 –> 00:10:52.039
– You could also just find a because again,

310
00:10:52.039 –> 00:10:53.720
– the problem with group intensives is they’re usually

311
00:10:53.720 –> 00:10:56.394
– on a particular date, right? And if your

312
00:10:56.394 –> 00:10:58.154
– life’s in a way where you don’t have

313
00:10:58.154 –> 00:11:01.595
– the flexibility to attend that particular date, then

314
00:11:01.595 –> 00:11:03.355
– you’re gonna have to do an individual intensive,

315
00:11:03.355 –> 00:11:04.715
– which is cool. So, and here’s the thing

316
00:11:04.715 –> 00:11:06.174
– I love about individual intensives

317
00:11:06.475 –> 00:11:09.120
– is find a, a therapist on my podcast

318
00:11:09.200 –> 00:11:11.279
– or on somebody else’s podcast, or a YouTube

319
00:11:11.279 –> 00:11:13.279
– video, or something that you really resonate with.

320
00:11:13.279 –> 00:11:15.600
– You’re like, I like that guy. Send him

321
00:11:15.600 –> 00:11:17.539
– an email. A lot of therapists,

322
00:11:17.919 –> 00:11:18.960
– not all of them, but a lot of

323
00:11:18.960 –> 00:11:22.179
– therapists do do in person multi day intensives.

324
00:11:22.584 –> 00:11:24.264
– And here’s the neat thing is, let’s say

325
00:11:24.264 –> 00:11:26.524
– that that therapist is only licensed in California

326
00:11:26.664 –> 00:11:28.304
– and you live in New Jersey. It’s not

327
00:11:28.304 –> 00:11:30.024
– a big deal because for the intensive, you’ll

328
00:11:30.024 –> 00:11:32.264
– just fly out there, grab a hotel for

329
00:11:32.264 –> 00:11:34.825
– a few nights, do six to ten hour

330
00:11:34.825 –> 00:11:36.445
– days with this therapist,

331
00:11:36.769 –> 00:11:38.289
– and dive more into the root. And, and

332
00:11:38.289 –> 00:11:40.850
– here’s where this is different than therapy. Therapy

333
00:11:40.850 –> 00:11:42.289
– is great, but here’s kind of the challenge

334
00:11:42.289 –> 00:11:43.889
– is in an hour session or a ninety

335
00:11:43.889 –> 00:11:46.210
– minute session. The real challenge with therapy is

336
00:11:46.210 –> 00:11:47.970
– we kind of have to pick a thing

337
00:11:47.970 –> 00:11:49.250
– and then we have to go deep on

338
00:11:49.250 –> 00:11:51.774
– that thing. Right? And then really next week,

339
00:11:51.774 –> 00:11:54.014
– we can’t really pick another thing because in

340
00:11:54.014 –> 00:11:56.575
– sixty, ninety minutes, that one thing’s not far

341
00:11:56.575 –> 00:11:58.735
– from done. Right? The first session really just

342
00:11:58.735 –> 00:12:00.254
– kind of exposed it, put awareness to it.

343
00:12:00.254 –> 00:12:01.615
– But then we need two, three, four, or

344
00:12:01.615 –> 00:12:04.080
– five sessions to really figure out kind of

345
00:12:04.080 –> 00:12:06.320
– how we’re gonna modify this belief system or

346
00:12:06.320 –> 00:12:08.639
– this, oh, this faulty pattern. Okay. And then

347
00:12:08.639 –> 00:12:10.879
– after that’s done. Okay. Cool. Five, six, seven

348
00:12:10.879 –> 00:12:12.720
– visits later, we’re onto the next thing. Well,

349
00:12:12.720 –> 00:12:15.620
– the problem is there’s usually twenty, thirty, forty,

350
00:12:15.840 –> 00:12:16.340
– fifty

351
00:12:16.695 –> 00:12:20.215
– problematic things in somebody’s process addiction. And so

352
00:12:20.215 –> 00:12:22.855
– while therapy is great, here’s the challenge with

353
00:12:22.855 –> 00:12:25.654
– sex addiction recovery is there is a sense

354
00:12:25.654 –> 00:12:27.815
– of urgency here because we need to again

355
00:12:27.815 –> 00:12:29.815
– get ourselves on that healthy side of the

356
00:12:29.815 –> 00:12:32.019
– recovery spectrum as fast as possible, especially if

357
00:12:32.019 –> 00:12:33.700
– you’re married. Because I I don’t know about

358
00:12:33.700 –> 00:12:35.139
– you, but my wife was not going to

359
00:12:35.139 –> 00:12:35.639
– tolerate

360
00:12:36.100 –> 00:12:37.159
– a slip or a relapse.

361
00:12:37.460 –> 00:12:38.899
– Right? She was not going to tolerate that.

362
00:12:38.899 –> 00:12:40.500
– She needed me in great recovery and she

363
00:12:40.500 –> 00:12:41.940
– needed me to be honest and never make

364
00:12:41.940 –> 00:12:43.779
– this mistake again. So there was a sense

365
00:12:43.779 –> 00:12:45.821
– of urgency in there and that’s why I

366
00:12:45.821 –> 00:12:48.017
– love intensives. Now I’m still biased towards group

367
00:12:48.017 –> 00:12:50.212
– intensives and here’s why the challenge is therapists

368
00:12:50.212 –> 00:12:52.407
– are wonderful, but it’s just one person’s opinion,

369
00:12:52.407 –> 00:12:54.603
– right? So they’re going to do their best

370
00:12:54.603 –> 00:12:56.570
– to help create moments for you. Cause that’s

371
00:12:56.570 –> 00:12:58.250
– really what you’re paying for with these intenses,

372
00:12:58.250 –> 00:13:00.490
– right? It’s not so much healing because healing

373
00:13:00.490 –> 00:13:02.570
– takes more than three days, but it’s that,

374
00:13:02.570 –> 00:13:05.129
– okay, holy smokes. I understand me now. I

375
00:13:05.129 –> 00:13:07.289
– understand how all of this happened. And then

376
00:13:07.289 –> 00:13:09.129
– from there we go on through the recovery

377
00:13:09.129 –> 00:13:10.909
– process of, of making all the modifications.

378
00:13:11.424 –> 00:13:13.105
– The cool thing about groups and the reason

379
00:13:13.105 –> 00:13:14.865
– groups are so popular and all the research

380
00:13:14.865 –> 00:13:17.184
– says that peer support groups are the most

381
00:13:17.184 –> 00:13:18.945
– effective thing you can do is you’re getting

382
00:13:18.945 –> 00:13:20.165
– a bunch of other people’s

383
00:13:20.625 –> 00:13:23.825
– opinions and outlooks. And so you’re creating way

384
00:13:23.825 –> 00:13:26.279
– more moments. And this is why I always

385
00:13:26.279 –> 00:13:27.720
– encourage, try to find a group full of

386
00:13:27.720 –> 00:13:30.299
– people like you. Right? Similar goals, similar aspirations,

387
00:13:30.679 –> 00:13:33.480
– similar place in life, similar mindset. Because obviously

388
00:13:33.480 –> 00:13:35.320
– the more like you they are, the more

389
00:13:35.320 –> 00:13:36.759
– and more you guys are gonna have very

390
00:13:36.759 –> 00:13:40.279
– similar experiences, which then again statistically increases the

391
00:13:40.279 –> 00:13:43.044
– chances of you having those light bulb moments

392
00:13:43.345 –> 00:13:45.605
– about why all of this happened. Right? Understanding

393
00:13:45.664 –> 00:13:48.225
– your process addiction. Again, if you can’t access

394
00:13:48.225 –> 00:13:50.225
– that, that’s fine. Therapy, I’ve done a ton

395
00:13:50.225 –> 00:13:52.625
– of just one on one therapy intensives and

396
00:13:52.625 –> 00:13:55.110
– they’re, and they’re extremely effective as well. The

397
00:13:55.110 –> 00:13:57.129
– other thing that you can do is consume

398
00:13:57.590 –> 00:14:00.629
– books and podcasts, YouTube videos, etcetera. And the

399
00:14:00.629 –> 00:14:02.309
– reason for this is again, we’re trying to

400
00:14:02.309 –> 00:14:04.149
– get, we’re trying to hear as many just

401
00:14:04.149 –> 00:14:06.549
– concepts and ideas as we can about, again,

402
00:14:06.549 –> 00:14:08.834
– your past, your present. You’re trying to put

403
00:14:08.834 –> 00:14:10.355
– all the pieces together so that you can

404
00:14:10.355 –> 00:14:11.815
– start tracing these breadcrumbs

405
00:14:12.195 –> 00:14:14.355
– back to where this all came from. Right?

406
00:14:14.355 –> 00:14:16.514
– That’s the whole concept of root cause. Here’s

407
00:14:16.514 –> 00:14:18.274
– the only challenge with books and podcasts or

408
00:14:18.274 –> 00:14:20.355
– any kind of passive resource that you’re consuming

409
00:14:20.355 –> 00:14:20.855
– is

410
00:14:21.320 –> 00:14:22.759
– I love my book. I think it’s very

411
00:14:22.759 –> 00:14:23.799
– helpful. A lot of guys have found it

412
00:14:23.799 –> 00:14:25.399
– helpful. The problem is I don’t know who

413
00:14:25.399 –> 00:14:27.959
– you are. I’ve never met you before, or

414
00:14:27.959 –> 00:14:29.720
– maybe I have, depending on who’s listening to

415
00:14:29.720 –> 00:14:31.639
– this podcast. But because I didn’t write the

416
00:14:31.639 –> 00:14:33.959
– book for you, we’re gonna miss a lot

417
00:14:33.959 –> 00:14:35.704
– of context. So that’s the only reason I

418
00:14:35.704 –> 00:14:39.004
– still guide men towards in person intensives is

419
00:14:39.065 –> 00:14:41.485
– it’s this neat opportunity to really make customized

420
00:14:42.184 –> 00:14:44.824
– feedback and customized recovery plan for you as

421
00:14:44.824 –> 00:14:47.070
– an individual for your specific process addiction.

422
00:14:47.470 –> 00:14:50.269
– Your third option is, again, therapy. It’s not

423
00:14:50.269 –> 00:14:51.870
– like therapy is not gonna help with all

424
00:14:51.870 –> 00:14:54.029
– this. A really good therapist is gonna help

425
00:14:54.029 –> 00:14:56.190
– you retrace all these things. That’s not a

426
00:14:56.190 –> 00:14:57.870
– bad thing. The only reason I’m partial to

427
00:14:57.870 –> 00:15:00.669
– intensives and even passive materials is you can

428
00:15:00.669 –> 00:15:03.044
– increase the speed at which you’re consuming it.

429
00:15:03.044 –> 00:15:04.725
– Now there is such thing as too much

430
00:15:04.725 –> 00:15:07.284
– recovery. Okay? So, so don’t do that, but

431
00:15:07.284 –> 00:15:09.365
– find that sweet spot where you’re basically you

432
00:15:09.365 –> 00:15:12.404
– have the opportunity to assemble everything that you

433
00:15:12.404 –> 00:15:14.404
– need to figure out how this happened and

434
00:15:14.404 –> 00:15:16.004
– create a plan so you can get it

435
00:15:16.004 –> 00:15:17.365
– out of your life. And here’s the last

436
00:15:17.365 –> 00:15:19.100
– thing I’ll leave you with. I have never

437
00:15:19.100 –> 00:15:21.820
– met a man who has mastered self, who

438
00:15:21.820 –> 00:15:23.600
– has continued to slip and relapse.

439
00:15:24.059 –> 00:15:25.980
– Okay? Self mastery is the name of the

440
00:15:25.980 –> 00:15:28.220
– game. You need to figure out, yes, the

441
00:15:28.220 –> 00:15:29.899
– root cause, but more importantly, you need to

442
00:15:29.899 –> 00:15:31.774
– figure out a way of living so that

443
00:15:31.774 –> 00:15:34.335
– you can prevent any of these harmful beliefs

444
00:15:34.335 –> 00:15:35.695
– and kind of kind of these, you know,

445
00:15:35.695 –> 00:15:36.975
– whatever you wanna call them. I call them

446
00:15:36.975 –> 00:15:39.215
– pathologies, but whatever you wanna call these beliefs

447
00:15:39.215 –> 00:15:41.134
– in your head that you developed early in

448
00:15:41.134 –> 00:15:43.455
– life as adaptations to help you. And in

449
00:15:43.455 –> 00:15:45.475
– many ways, they made you extremely successful.

450
00:15:46.259 –> 00:15:48.259
– They’re going to cause you harm though if

451
00:15:48.259 –> 00:15:50.019
– you have not mastered self and figured out

452
00:15:50.019 –> 00:15:51.700
– a way to prevent these from affecting your

453
00:15:51.700 –> 00:15:54.019
– life. Right? In my own recovery, there’s a

454
00:15:54.019 –> 00:15:55.860
– ton of things that I have gotten past

455
00:15:55.860 –> 00:15:58.259
– that I feel like are potentially out of

456
00:15:58.259 –> 00:16:00.340
– my life permanently and have not continued to

457
00:16:00.340 –> 00:16:01.924
– haunt me. But there are one or two

458
00:16:01.924 –> 00:16:03.764
– or three of my brain processes that I

459
00:16:03.764 –> 00:16:05.764
– feel them. Sometimes I feel them daily. Sometimes

460
00:16:05.764 –> 00:16:07.365
– I feel them once a month. They are

461
00:16:07.365 –> 00:16:09.044
– there. And those things are going to threaten

462
00:16:09.044 –> 00:16:10.485
– the safety that my wife and I have

463
00:16:10.485 –> 00:16:12.105
– built. So, it’s my self mastery

464
00:16:12.404 –> 00:16:14.485
– that I have developed that prevents those things

465
00:16:14.485 –> 00:16:16.289
– from coming back into my life. But again,

466
00:16:16.289 –> 00:16:18.049
– I’ve never met a man who has mastered

467
00:16:18.049 –> 00:16:20.309
– self who continues to slip and relapse.

468

– achievers as possible, and I can’t do it
