11. Connecting with other Sex Addicts… Harder than it sounds

We know that the opposite of addiction is not sobriety… It’s connection. Here’s the problem though… connection is complex.

Every sex addiction therapist, counselor, podcast, book, and YouTube video will tell you to connect with other addicts. You will hear them telling you to call guys from group when you are struggling or experiencing cravings/urges.

All of this advice is spot on… but connection is harder than they make it sound.

Connection happens between two people with common interests, lifestyles, and relatable circumstances. Just because they share the same addiction does not mean that connection will be possible. 

I don’t share this with you to intimidate you or discourage you from connecting with other addicts. It’s actually the opposite. I want to shine a light on how hard connection can be, especially when you are limited to 12-step programs, such as Sex Aholics Anonymous and Sex Addicts Anonymous.

Connection is critical to your recovery. But, don’t just sit back and wait for connection to find you. Otherwise, you may be waiting for a really long time.

Take initiative and find your tribe to recover with.
